Gyöngyös is a charming town at the foot of the Mátra mountains, and near Kékes, the highest peak of Hungary at 1,014 metres. It offers a rich cultural heritage, with Art-Nouveau and Baroque buildings, as well as a 15th-century Gothic church.

Located next to the Gothic church, Hungary’s largest Franciscan monastery houses a library boasting over 20,000 volumes of valuable religious manuscripts. Another landmark, the Orczy Mansion is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, and houses the second largest natural history collection in Hungary. The town’s central square, with its historic buildings often hosts festivals and concerts.

Gyöngyös is a great base for exploring the natural beauty of the Mátra, where you can hike, bike, or ski, depending on the season. The town is also known for its vibrant wine culture, with local cellars offering traditional Hungarian wines. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or gastronomy, Gyöngyös has something to offer every visitor.
